This project is designed to deepen students’ understanding of how color works—not just as a visual element, but as a tool to express emotion, atmosphere, and focus. By learning to mix their own palettes and apply them to a themed painting, students will discover the power of intentional color choices in storytelling and design.

Students will:

  • Use color theory to mix and match palettes thoughtfully, exploring relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. They'll gain hands-on experience with:
Complementary colors to create bold contrast and visual interest,
Analogous colors for harmony and smooth transitions,
Triadic and split-complementary schemes for balanced and vibrant compositions,
    And
warm vs. cool colors to shift mood and spatial depth.

  • Explore mixing techniques to create custom hues, tints, tones, and shades, developing a stronger awareness of how subtle changes in value and saturation affect the whole piece.

  • Apply their palette to a themed painting project, where each student chooses or is guided to focus on a theme—such as nature, emotion, memory, or an imaginative scene—that encourages them to express mood through their color choices.

  • Develop brushwork and layering skills in either acrylic or watercolor, applying their color schemes to create balance, rhythm, and atmosphere in their composition.

  • Build confidence in independent decision-making, as they plan, test, and refine their color palette before committing to the final work.

This project not only reinforces technical color knowledge, but also encourages personal expression and creative risk-taking, helping students to see color as a powerful part of their visual language.
